After successful 2021, Marvel fans can expect an exciting 2022
Following the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s action-packed year of 2021, the year of 2022 is expected to be a major one for the franchise. “Spider-Man: No Way Home” smashed box office records near the end of 2021 and in succession, Marvel has several films and Disney+ TV series planned for the year.
The much anticipated year starts off with a bang with the release of the Disney+ series “Moon Knight” on March 30. The series features Marc Spector (Oscar Isaac) and his struggle with an identity disorder, and his eventual journey towards becoming Moon Knight.
Following Moon Knight, the first film of the new year, “Dr. Strange: In The Multiverse of Madness” is expected to be released on May 6. The film is expected to show the aftermath of the Multiversal Chaos created in the 2021 Disney+ series “Loki” and “Spider-Man: No way Home.” The film brings back Benedict Cumberbatch as Dr. Strange and Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff. With the Multiverse being opened, the film is rumored to feature many surprise cameos from all sorts of past, present and future MCU projects.
Succeeding this film comes the Disney+ series Ms. Marvel, with a planned summer release, but an unconfirmed release date. This series follows Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) and her adventures towards becoming Ms. Marvel.
With an unconfirmed release date, Marvel fans can expect the Disney+ series “She-Hulk” to be released sometime in mid-2022. The highly anticipated series features Jennifer Walters (Tatiana Maslany) as She-Hulk, the female version of the fan-favorite hero Hulk. Mark Ruffalo reprises his role as Bruce Banner (Hulk) in the series. The series is expected to be more of a comedy than other series from the franchise, a direct take from the She-Hulk comic series.
Marvel’s film-filled summer finishes out on July 8, with the premiere of “Thor: Love and Thunder.” The fourth installment of the Thor franchise is anticipated to follow Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and his relationship with Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) and her gaining of powers, similar to Thor’s. The film is planned to include Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) and several other members of the Guardians of the Galaxy.
The final film of the year is expected to be “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” with a release date of Nov 11. The film had to heavily alter production plans following the original Black Panther actor Chadwick Boseman’s sudden death due to his private battle with cancer in 2020. After Boseman’s death, Marvel chose not to recast the role of T’Challa (Black Panther) and also choose to not include Boseman in the form of a digital double. Instead, Marvel plans to focus on the other characters introduced in the first film and celebrate Boseman’s legacy.
The latest expected Disney+ series is “Secret Invasion,” with an unconfirmed release date, but the series is expected to be released in late 2022. The series brings back Samuel L. Jackson in his role as Nick Fury and is expected to explore the continued effect of the Skrulls, the aliens introduced in “Captain Marvel,” and their constant shapeshifting.
The final MCU project of 2022 is expected to be “The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special,” a one-episode special that is forecasted to tie together the gap between “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” and “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” which is expected to be released in mid-2023.
