Winter Guard season overview
As winter guard finishes their season, they have made history at winter guard internationals placing seventh with an overall score of 77.470 making it to finals. At state, they placed third with an overall score of 87.64, and for the first time since 2017, they medaled. Many of the guard members have said that without the direction of Diana Williams, they wouldn’t have made it as far as they did.
“Mrs. Williams brought in professional designers and got us new directors for our program. They changed a lot of things and made us really close,” sophomore Bethany Hullet said.
Returning to a normal season after COVID, they have successfully come back this season better than ever. With Madison Barnes and Haley Eaves as the new directors for the guard, they’ve changed the program into a strong team of people.
“They changed a bunch of warm-ups and rules. With the changes, the team was pretty iffy at first, then we realized all the changes were to benefit us,” freshman Kamryn Geis said.
From multiple snow days this year, some contests had to go virtual. Yukon was supposed to host a contest for winter guard but they couldn’t host it for weather reasons.
“For our virtual contest we went to the main gym and recorded a video of our performance and sent it to another contest that wasn’t postponed,” Geis said.
For every contest, the emotions were all different, at winter guard internationals the team was jumping with joy. The last contest of the year was one of the most emotional ones this year.
“I feel like the last contest was my favorite because everyone was crying and it was the last contest for the seniors. It made it so much more special and I can just remember that feeling,” Hullet said.
