The New Mutants
The “New Mutants” is a movie about five teenagers who have superhuman-like abilities and are sent to a secret institution to be “helped” by a doctor that claims she can “cure” the dangers of their powers. As the story progresses, the teenagers realize that they were lied to and kept at the institution against their will, but have no idea why.
Originally this was supposed to be the last film in the X-Men series of movies by 20th Century Fox, but that idea was cancelled because Disney bought the studio and decided to make it a stand-alone film.
The movie features stars Anya Taylor-Joy, Maisie Wlliams, Henry Zaga, Blu Hunt, and Charlie Heaton.
The Action/Adventure/Horror film was supposed to debut April 13, 2018 but had many problems and delays due to the Fox and Disney deal and ended up releasing on April 3, 2020.
The theme of the movie is about conquering darkest fears and demons. The movie shows this theme through tragic backstories for the main cast of characters and how they live and learn to adapt to their new lives as the next generation of mutants.
I did like the chemistry the cast had together in most of the scenes. It felt like the cast naturally worked well together which was a pleasant thing to see and differentiates itself from several other superhero movies where the cast bonds and relationships feel forced.
Another thing that I did like was the looks of the effects and CGI of the movie. I was expecting this movie to look a lot worse than it did because of all of the delays for the release. The Smiley Men I expected to look kind of sluggish and weird, but I was surprised how terrifying the characters were. Another example of the impressive effects was visual representation of the mutants using their powers.
While the effects and dynamics between characters were engaging, I found myself uninterested in the plot with many moments that were easily predictable, like the reveal of the main villains. The structure of the main character’s development also feels basic and didn’t surprise me in the slightest, but I wouldn’t say that completely ruins the film.
Overall I would say that this movie was okay, not good or bad, decent. If you want a different kind of superhero movie but also very average then go ahead, but otherwise, don’t waste your time. My final score for the movie is a solid 6.5/10.
