Yukon gets big win to help potential push for Playoffs against Westmoore
November 5, 2021
Yukon needed to win against Westmoore if they wanted any chance to make the playoffs, and that is exactly what they did beating them 40-21. “Getting a win like this is always awesome but we can’t get all caught up in it as business isn’t finished,” Head coach Hahn said. “We still need to beat Edmond Memorial to get that playoff spot, so that is where our current focus is at now.”
Yukon is down 0-7 with Westmoore having the ball until senior Luke Harris gets the tackle from behind and forces the fumble and recovers it. “I knew we were down so I needed to make this tackle or else we would go down 14-0,” Harris said. “So naturally when he lost the ball, I took my opportunity and dived on top of the ball immediately to give us the ball back.”
'
A few plays later, Yukon still down 0-7, sophomore Logan Day gets an open lane and takes off for 40 yards. “It was getting close to the end of the quarter so we ran a play that gave me the ball and it worked out well for us.,” Day said. “We’ve run that same play multiple times in practice so I saw my opportunity and capitalized on it.”
'
Yukon gets their first points on the board as senior Keaton Hahn rushed for 12 yards into the endzone for a Millers touchdown followed by the extra point field goal converted by senior Gage Farha making the score 7-7. “ Coach has made sure that we can see paths to take when we run the ball in practice,” Hahn said. “So naturally when I recognized one, I was able to take advantage of it and get this game tied up.”
'
Yukon ends the first half with Farha drilling a field goal 16 yards away to give the millers the lead 10-7. “This is something that I’m used to so hitting this field goal wasn’t a problem for me,” Farha said. “ I’m just glad I could help the team get the lead going into the half.”
'
The Millers appear to be doing stretches to get them ready for the second half of the game. “I really liked what I was seeing from our defense in the first half, but something that would really give us the edge here is if we could capitalize a bit better on our drives.” Coach Hahn said.
'
With a chance to score for Yukon to go up 16-7, senior Brayden Dutton appears to run a play to get a receiver open for a catch, but an open lane takes place and he runs it into the endzone for another Miller’s touchdown. “We don’t usually throw the ball too often, but tonight we looked to change that and it really opened up better opportunities for us to score like this play for instance.” Dutton said. Once again, the extra point was converted by Farha to furthermore increase the lead to 17-7.
'
Westmoore is on their third down looking to try to get a first so they can keep moving the ball up the field, but senior Shane Scott has plans to stop that as he gets the sack to force Westmoore to punt the ball back into Yukon’s hands. “ My job as a DE (Defensive End) is to make sure that the opposing offense doesn’t score, and me getting that sack on 14 definitely helped accomplish that goal.” Scott said.
'
Westmoore goes on a run to get the gap as close as 23-21 Yukon in the lead. They go for the two point conversion on this play to try to tie it up, but senior Zacary Stillwell makes a fantastic diving tackle to stop it from happening. “I remember getting past my guy so I knew I had to make this tackle or else they would tie the game up right here.” Stillwell said.
'
Millers have a chance to increase their lead from 23-21 to 26-21 from a 29 yard field goal by Farha and that is exactly what they do. “I usually didn’t get to kick this much in a game, but I’m proud to say I feel like I did a great job capitalizing on the times I did.” Farha said.
'
Yukon forces a turnover on downs to give Yukon the ball back up 33-21 as on the drive before they scored a touchdown and converted the extra point by none other than Dutton and Farha. “This defensive play as a coach to see my players do is something I like to see and take pride in,” Coach Hahn said. “ Having guys make these defensive plays over and over again I can confidently say played one of the biggest factors in us winning the game.”
'
The Millers begin to celebrate their victory with the final score resulting in 40-21. “Getting the win always feels good, but we are already thinking about the next game as it is the last game of our regular season and it determines if we are in the playoffs or not, so we need to be ready for it,” Coach Hahn said.
