Artificial Intelligence has been a very complex topic in the news throughout the past year and has become confusing for most. The biggest name in AI has been ChatGPT, but Snapchat has made AI reach a broader audience with the introduction of My AI. Usage of AI was a reason for the Writer’s Guild of America strike this year.
The dictionary definition of artificial intelligence is the capability of a machine to imitate intelligent human behavior. AI is used every day without realizing it, when used for Face ID or when apps such as YouTube or TikTok pick which videos to show users next based on their interests. Narrow AI, such as ChatGPT is able to complete one task. General AI can complete multiple tasks and is farther away from becoming a reality. Deep-learning AI has the ability to teach itself tasks, such as how to play a simple video game by itself.
“Artificial Intelligence has the potential to revolutionize industries and improve our daily lives through automation, personalization, and innovation,” ChatGPT said. However, as with any powerful tool, there are also drawbacks such as ethical concerns, job displacement, and algorithmic bias that need to be carefully addressed.”
ChatGPT is a chatbot, a computer that has the ability to have a conversation. Similar to Google, ChatGPT will respond to a question with an answer similar to how a human would respond. The increased popularity of ChatGPT has encouraged other companies to make similar apps that run on AI. Snapchat’s My AI is run by the same company, OpenAI, that runs ChatGPT. Other companies such as Google itself and Microsoft Bing have tried to use AI chatbots on their websites to improve communication.
“ChatGPT is an AI-based language model that can be used as a conversational agent for answering questions, providing information, or generating text,” ChatGPT said. “Its natural language processing capabilities make it a versatile tool for a wide range of applications, from customer service chatbots to content creation and research assistance.”
Many educators are concerned with ChatGPT’s ability to generate text, which students have used to create essays, with some calling it the end of High School English. ChatGPT had the ability to create this article, which the author, as well as The Insight, would like to reiterate that it did not.
“A lot of the English teachers are looking into websites that will help check if it is AI,” English teacher Mrs. Crabtree said. “I don’t think it’s the end of high school English but I do think it is going to be a very big change that we will have to address and do things differently.”
