Ethan Lawson looks ahead as he rounds a corner at the cross country team’s meet at Eldon Lyon Park in Bethany.

Most cross country runners begin running well before high school. With much of the varsity team beginning to run in middle school, Sophomore Ethan Lawson took a less traditional path towards being a member of the varsity team.
Before Lawson began cross country, he was mainly a soccer player, however, once he reached the high school level, he decided to run cross country. Lawson credits his desire of doing great for beginning the sport.
“I did cross country because I like to push myself and show others that I am capable of doing great things,” Lawson said.
As a second year member of the team, Lawson is now a member of the varsity squad, a step up from his freshman year, which was spent leading the JV team. Over the summer, Lawson played soccer to prepare for his advancement.
“I prepared for the season by playing a lot of soccer, which probably isn’t the best way to get into running shape, but it worked for me,” Lawson said.
Being on the varsity team is no easy task, and Lawson does not take the chance for granted.
“To me, being on varsity is a privilege and an honor to be running with a great group of individuals,” Lawson said.
Going forward, Lawson hopes to keep pushing forward past the level he is at, and further his continued success.
“My goals for myself in cross country are to be able to run faster, and have a great time while doing so,” Lawson said.
