Under the Friday night lights with watchful eyes all around, the Yukon millers football team pursue one primary goal. That primary goal was to improve weekly, aiming to win games and potentially make playoffs. For Senior defensive back Taybon Gammon, meeting the goal was standard.
“As a team, make the playoffs, and do better than last year, have a winning record this year as well,” Gammon said.
Last year the football team recorded one win in ten games with the one win being 36-33 with the millers kicking a field goal to capture the win against Stillwater. Football didn’t make playoffs last year and finished last in district play but for the team to make the playoffs this year they need to finish 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th out of eight teams in their district. It’s important for teams that are trying to compete for a playoff spot that they be trained and prepared but for Senior wide receiver Lucas Jones it’s about discipline and team chemistry.
“The standard for us as players has been talking about discipline really, just talking about being disciplined and being a good teammate,” Jones said.
For the Miller’s football team, discipline and teamwork are emphasized as team standards worth understanding. The football team looked to build a firm foundation on discipline and team chemistry so the team can have one primary goal together and work as a team to achieve the goal. The football team took this goal and used it by taking the summer seriously with the weight room and making gains to be better, faster, and stronger. The Miller’s goal this summer was to out size and be more physical than anyone on the field with them according to head coach and assistant athletic director Brent Barnes.
“I think the offseason is really important in the weight room and the development during the offseason,” Barnes said. “We’re focused on what’s needed for this season and next.”
