Super Bowl LX has officially wrapped and is in the books and here’s what I think: overall the Super Bowl in my opinion was mediocre, not bad but certainly not good either, just OK at best. There was the good, the bad, and the ugly all across Super Bowl LX from the game, to the ads, to the halftime show and even the national anthem. But some aspects saved this Super Bowl from being an utter and complete burnout.
One of good parts of Super Bowl LX included the national anthem and halftime show. Charlie Puth put on a strong performance of the national anthem. He put his soul into the vocals with sweet harmonics. A choir singing in the background added a nice touch and made the national anthem so bitter sweet and one of the best renditions in recent years.
Next to that, the halftime show, hosted by six-time Grammy award winning artist, Bad Bunny with guest appearances from Lady Gaga and Ricky Martin. Bad Bunny played some of his most popular songs such as “Titi Me Pregunto” and “Dtmf.” “Soltera,” “Monaco” and “Baile Inolvidable” which were songs that made me want to get up and dance despite not fully understanding the lyrics.
Bad Bunny and Lady Gaga also danced to a Latin remix of “Die With a Smile” (a song that Gaga duetted with Bruno Mars at the 2024) which was a neat rendition that I could get behind.
Bad Bunny then sang “Lo Que Le Paso a Hawai” with Ricky Martin in a way that left me with the impression that Martin was passing the torch to Bad Bunny to carry on the legacy. Bad Bunny capped off the halftime show saying “God bless America” and naming every Latin country before heading to the dugout in an legitimately good halftime show and highlight of the Super Bowl.
One of the bad parts of the Super Bowl was honestly the game itself. Analysts knew beforehand this would be a defensive game, and boy were they right. In a game that was supposed to be a rematch of the 2015 Super Bowl where the Patriots narrowly won 28-24 off of a goal line interception in the final seconds, I thought this would be a similar back and forth. But the Seahawks dominated the game and kept the Patriots’ hopes down.
The Seahawks sacked Patriot quarterback Drake Maye six times which was one away from a Super Bowl record. They also recorded three turnovers, one of which was a pick-six in the fourth quarter. On top of that, Seahawks kicker Jason Myers recorded 17 points (more than the Patriots) going 5/5 on three point attempts and three point after touchdown (PAT). The game was very boring till the fourth quarter when both teams actually started scoring, but by then my interest was lost and the Seahawks were still dominating.
The Ugly parts were definitely the ads. Usually the Super Bowl is known for the creative and often humorous ads during each commercial break. This year, the ads were lazy and lacked creativity. I felt that I was owed an apology after suffering through a series of ads that felt uncreative and bland.
There were ads promoting AI and commercials created with AI. The company Ring aired a commercial promoting facial recognition disguised as a wholesome commercial about finding a lost dog using the technology. The Levi’s commercial caught me completely off guard. There were some public service announcements that were awkward or felt poorly executed. And a lot of movie promotions that didn’t feel exciting enough to be revealed.
I felt like a lot of commercials were rushed or used A-list celebrities to distract from the mediocrity and the lack of content. Hardly any commercials caught my attention
A couple of ads were entertaining. The Manscaped commercial, although a little weird, was creative and funny. The Instacart commercial with Ben Stiller and Benson Boone was also funny.
Although this Super Bowl had some broken records and major achievements, overall it wasn’t the best. But it certainly wasn’t terrible either. Compared to other Super Bowls the magic was lacking, especially since we know what the Super Bowl is capable of producing in terms of entertainment.
Overall, I felt more like I was watching Thursday Night Football rather than the traditional Super Bowl.
