Coming off of a mediocre freshman year on the junior varsity team, Chaparro was ready to start training again alone in the summer, but other training plans arose.
“One of the reasons I was able to improve is because Cade, another cross country runner, invited me to run so often and I started to wonder if I could be on varsity,” Chaparro said. “A few months into the summer I was going on 10-mile runs with him. It wasn’t easy, but it sure did pay off in the end.”
Chaparro was a key varsity runner this season, finishing 38th at the state meet with a time of 17:12.
He was often one of the most unwavering runners, in fact, coach Matt Parent dubbed Chaparro “Mr. Consistent” of the team. Chaparro credits his successful season to his constant desire to improve.
“After every meet, I felt like I could’ve gone faster, and having that thought made me want to push harder as the weeks went by,” Chaparro said.
Chaparro’s constant desire to get better has helped take his running career to the next level.
“Someday I hope to run on the collegiate level, D1 or D2,” Chaparro said. “So next year I want to be hitting 16:30s or below. I just have to keep working hard and putting in the mileage.”
